The new 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will commence from March 26 at the venues of Mumbai & Pune. The world’s most famous domestic cricketing tournament will be played for 65 days. The two new teams have been added this year to the carter of IPL due to young domestic talent in India. Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the tournament as they have clinched 5 title victories, closely followed by Chennai Super Kings with 4 trophies. Kolkata Knight Riders are also among the three successful teams of all time.
They have won 4 titles and the greater one against Chennai Super Kings in 2012. Gautam Gambhir is also the third most victorious skipper in IPL after Rohit & MSD. Playoffs are the spot where one lousy moment can spoil the whole party of any king-size team. Royal Challengers Bangalore has the perfect experience; they have played all tough matches courageously in the playoff and reached three times in the finals. But, they lost in their three golden chances in (2009, 2011, 2016) of becoming champions. Not every team got many chances of becoming champions in the playoffs, but there are meager teams who qualify for the most times and got plenty of opportunities.

#1 Chennai Super Kings (12)
Chennai Super Kings holds the record for getting qualified in the playoffs 12 times in 14 editions of IPL they are part of. MS Dhoni leading CSK has made their entrance in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023. They also accomplished the record of appearing ten times in the grand finale of the Indian Premier League. Out of 10, they have five times owned the trophy in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.
Though, CSK is the second most successful franchise in the matter of victory after Mumbai Indians. But, they have always dominated the proceedings till the nomination of Play-offs. The cool-headed skipper MS Dhoni always ensures the best scheme of things for the team. In the tally of 16 overall IPL seasons, CSK hadn’t played all due to being banned for two years, which means after looking at things clearly, CSK had put their step in for 12 out of 14 times in the playoffs of the Indian Premier League.
#2 Mumbai Indians (10)
The Mumbai Paltan has been nominated ten times for the war of playoffs in their 14 years of IPL journey. In the leadership of Sachin Tendulkar, they have qualified two times in the years 2010 & 2011, and Harbhajan Singh had taken them to the rally again in 2012, but MI never got close to the trophy in their reigns. Since the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, they got elected for playoffs in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, & 2023 – the era of leadership when MI clinched 5 trophies in the six-time qualification.
That’s the impact of Rohit Sharma’s presence with the side of Mumbai Indians. Kieron Pollard (as a mentor in the & Rohit Sharma are the two men who have been involved in each championship victory of Mumbai. Fingers crossed that the team will again take a leap to the playoffs & will achieve something significant in IPL 2022.
#3 Royal Challengers Bangalore (8)
Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team with zero IPL championships, has qualified for the final frontier of the IPL seasons eight times out of 16 editions. The team with one of the biggest loyal followers around the country is known for its batting supremacies like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, and now Glenn Maxwell. However, their inconsistent outings and toothless bowling attack made their dream of winning the title still wide open.
In fact, AB de Villiers was made a huge Indian superstar after being part of the RCB franchise. Despite not known as the IPL champion, the team has given a lot more to this tournament than any team.
In his Autobiography, AB de Villiers – The Autobiography, ABD wrote a lot about how his life changed after being part of the franchise. He even quoted in his book the former West Indian great Vivian Richards, speaking to him at a private party during the fifth edition of the IPL in 2012:
“I’m serious, you’re changing the way this game is played. People used to say the same about me many years ago, but I am saying it to you now. You are taking cricket to a new level. Keep going.”
The team has shown progress in other departments in the recent editions, and hopefully, the wait will be shorter.
The Wrap
Three other teams, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, have finished top four six times in the tournament, whereas the champion side in the inaugural edition, Rajasthan Royals, has qualified five times so far—the other side, which was part of the inaugural edition of the IPL, Punjab Kings have made it to the Knock-outs twice.
Interestingly, the two new sides of IPL 2022, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, have made it to the Playoffs stage in their first two seasons – 2022 and 2023. Moreover, GT has made it to the final in both seasons and is the champion of IPL 2022.
